Democratic painting in Berlin

biennaleberlino_490bis.jpgDraftsman's Congress - St. Elisabeth Church, Berlin

Walls of a deconsecrated church transformed into giant blank pages; palettes upon which social themes are discussed using words and drawings. The idea comes from Polish artist Pawel Althamer. Title: Draftsman's Congress. The installation is part of the Seventh Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art, dedicated this year to the link between art and politics.

Pencils, charcoal, brushes, paint: there are no rules, the only thing that matters is the honesty of one's ideas. The Congress will continue throughout the Biennale, growing day by day with drawings. Special sessions will be held by the artist, including one organized for Moleskine in which artists and the public use drawings to "discuss" the major conflicts that have affected the world during the last decade.

The same open platform concept returns in the Moleskine special edition, designed by Althamer: a black notebook with a white space silk-screened on the cover; the cover is also a blank page. Some of these notebooks will be painted by the author and sold at the Biennale's official bookstore.

Ever Tried Analog SMS Texting?

1992-2012. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of SMS texting, Moleskine presents a new limited edition, a notebook that becomes a ballistic device for launching analog text messages. Maximum range: 5.18 m.

The idea comes from Pietro Corraini, who was inspired by the classic slingshot used for shooting notes between school desks. The cover is the launching pad; the three notches indicate the different load and range levels. The elastic is loaded with one note at a time, folded in four. Inside there is a booklet with instructions, field-tested suggestions and 56 pieces of paper ammunition including 8 which say "I love you," 4 "call me" and 4 "the answer is..."

"The device," say the instructions, "is especially effective in crowded, noisy environments for sending messages in code, romantic messages, urgent information and telephone numbers. Suitable for everyone, it has been tested in different classrooms, offices and outdoor areas. Keep out of reach of children."

Moleskine SMS is being presented in Milan for Design Week as part of "Hacked, 100 Hours of Rebel Creativity" promoted by la Rinascente. Along with SMS, there is another play on hacking: Moleskine Orchestra by British artist Felix Thorn. To learn about the complete program of Moleskine events at Fuorisalone, click here

Available at the MoleskineStore and, as a worldwide exclusive for Milan Design Week, at the Design Supermarket in la Rinascente and at the bookstore Libreria 121+ in Milan.

The Moleskine Orchestra

The Moleskine design objects have been hacked and morphed into musical instruments. Pens are clappers, notebooks are bellows, e-reader cases are drums, glasses, pens, booklights and erasers, all used as structural components of these Moleskine musical machines.

Sculptures in motion that play percussion, they make up the Moleskine Orchestra, the musical design installation created by Felix Thorn, visionary composer and music and technology expert, for Milan Design Week. A new kind of hybridization that joins the many hacks created by artists, life hackers, inventors and enthusiasts from around the world who enjoy rearranging Moleskine design objects in a variety of different ways.

Moleskine backpack, now also in a small version

A new video presents the Moleskine backpacks: rectangular shape, adjustable straps, waterproof material, rigid rubber base. Now also available in the Small version.

The video, created by the Combocut studio, plays with the backpacks as if they were musical instruments; the rubber base that is used as a drum keeps the backpack standing upright, protecting it when you put it down as well as making it easier to find things inside.

The Small version fits a laptop up to 10", the larger version up to 15".

Backpack_video_235_01.jpgBackpack_235_05.jpgBackpack_video_235_03.jpgBackpack_video_235_02.jpg

The pockets are zipped on the inside, with two more open pockets on the sides for those objects you want to keep handy. Black, inside and out.

Available at the MoleskineStore and in select stores around the world.

Lead that doesn't break

A new video tutorial led by Pix, a surreal analog/digital anchorman, presents the Moleskine Pencil Set. Fluorescent or graphite, in limewood or cedar, they clip onto your notebook with a special cap. The tip is highly resistant, to avoid the annoyance of broken lead in the sharpener. The cross-section is rectangular, recalling an antique carpenter's pencil. The matte casing is exclusively black. The sharpener with an extra strong blade is made to measure for Moleskine pencils. The pencils come with a set of 24 decorative mini stickers.

In the video, made by Gluekit, the phantom anchorman Pix demonstrates the analog set: the pencils, the accessories and the two new fluorescent colors, yellow and orange, to highlight and add color.

A companion to journals and notebooks, the Moleskine pencil also attaches to the cover with the Pen Holder, which holds up to three pens or pencils, or the special rectangular Moleskine eraser. Also part of the Accessories Set are the silicon rubber grips to improve handling and make extended writing or drawing sessions more comfortable.

The Pencil Set is available at the Moleskine Store in three different combinations: a set with two pencils, a cap and a sharpener; a set with graphite pencils only (2 with 2B lead and 1 HB); and a fluorescent set with two colored pencils, a cap and a sharpener.

Art Journal. Art that leaves its mark

Moleskine Passions, the video account of the first notebooks in the series

What is the artist trying to communicate? How much do my personal emotions influence how I perceive a work of art? Where can I find art today? How can I transfer the ideas that I get from art to my personal and professional life? Moleskine introduces Art Journal, a new notebook that you can fill using the subject areas and specific sections for archiving, designing and reflecting on one's experience with art.

The joy of university notes

Universities_490bis.jpgBeedie School of Business - Vancouver

Do you still have your old notes from university? Usually these are writings that we keep in a safe place because they have great sentimental value. And often they turn out to be useful many years later.

To give these university notes the dignity they deserve, different schools from around the world have decided to include classic Moleskine notebooks in their welcome kits for new students: from the Università Ca' Foscari in Venice to the School of Visual Arts in New York; from Berklee College of Music in Boston to the large academies and business schools of Oxford and Harvard.

These notebooks and journals with specially created covers and bands, in a variety of sizes and colors, are work tools for taking notes, organizing ideas and content, summarizing concepts or outlining projects for an exam. They are blank pages for writing, underlining and highlighting that you can go back to again and again to re-read and study. Years later, long after university has ended, you can can hold these same pages in your hand and leaf through them, following their evolution.

Here is a brief selection of "university" notebooks from around the world:

Messages: the new postal notebooks

Moleskine introduces the Messages collection, a family of newly conceived cards, a hybrid creation combining classic notebooks and traditional greeting cards. A new video, created by the Gluekit studio, presents the new collection using a surreal video sales pitch by the French Nouvelle Vague.

Frames from the video, by Gluekit.

The collection comes in two formats. The Postal Notebook, the notebook that becomes an envelope, is designed for people who love letter-writing and freehand creations. The side flaps turn the notebook into an envelope. The pages inside are blank, ready to be personalized with images, drawings, words and thoughts. The cover has space for postage and a mailing address. The second piece in the collection is the Note Card, a notebook with a separate envelope created for shorter messages.

Messages_235_04.jpgMessages_235_03.jpg

The notebooks in the Messages collection are available in pocket or large format, in six colors: maroon, dark blue, light gray, terracotta and ecru. The cover is made of heavy cardboard with visible Singer stitching.

To decorate the Messages pages, you can find a collection of specially created MSK templates in the myMoleskine section that you can download, print, cut out and stick on. There are seven subjects in a variety of formats: City, Message, Happening, Feed, Gift, Power, Idea, plus a blank template. You can download these here
